Background of the Study
Political campaign coverage is a cornerstone of democratic societies, enabling citizens to make informed decisions about political candidates and parties. However, ethical considerations in covering political campaigns are essential for ensuring fairness, impartiality, and accuracy. In Minna Local Government Area, Niger State, media outlets play a critical role in shaping public perception of political candidates and parties during election seasons. Ethical issues such as bias, sensationalism, misinformation, and conflicts of interest often arise in political campaign reporting. This study explores the role of ethics in political campaign coverage in Minna, examining the ethical challenges journalists face when reporting on political events, debates, and electoral processes. By analyzing the ethical dilemmas surrounding campaign coverage, this study aims to contribute to improving journalistic practices in election reporting (Adebayo & Ibrahim, 2023; Musa & Bello, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Minna, the media's role in political campaign coverage is frequently marked by ethical challenges. Journalists are often pressured to favor certain political parties or candidates, either due to personal biases or external influences, leading to skewed coverage that does not reflect the true dynamics of the electoral process. This bias can take the form of unequal coverage, sensationalist reporting, or the spread of misleading information. These ethical lapses in campaign coverage can affect voter decisions, contribute to political polarization, and undermine the integrity of the election process. This study seeks to investigate the ethical challenges faced by journalists in Minna when covering political campaigns, with a focus on issues such as fairness, accuracy, and objectivity (Ibrahim, 2023; Okoro & Suleiman, 2024).
